“Holly, stop playing with your french fries and eat them,” Kate insisted, finishing the last bite of her chicken sandwich.

“I’m not hungry anymore, Mommy,” Holly replied, twirling the tip of one long french fry in ketchup before dropping it on her plate.

“How many cookies did Ms. Sarah let you eat? A dozen?” Kate couldn’t help but giggle at her daughter. She never seemed to eat enough to get a tummy ache but she never stopped with Ms. Sarah’s cookies before she lost her appetite for lunch, and it didn’t seem to matter how nicely Kate asked Sarah to make sure she only had one, Holly always found a way to sneak in two or three more.

“I don’t know how many I ate,” Holly confessed. “More than one.”

Kate shook her head. “I told you we were going to lunch.”

“I know. But they taste so good. And Michael just kept eating them.”

“I’m sure his mother will be as thrilled at this information as I am.” Kate supposed it might be a little different, though, since Sarah was Michael’s grandmother now.

Holly slunk back against the booth. “Can we go home? I’m tired.”

“When do I have to go back to school?” Holly asked, leaning forward and resting her head on her fist, her elbow on the table.

“Uh, not until next Wednesday,” Kate replied, thinking about how many days that gave them. “You still have a little over a week.”

Holly sighed. “I miss my friends. And Ms. Swanner.”

Confused, since she’d assumed by the phrasing of her daughter’s question she wasn’t looking forward to going back to school, Kate wasn’t sure how to answer. Eventually, she said, “Well, you’ll get to see Cooper soon. And I’m sure Ms. Swanner is having a lovely break.”

“She’s going to marry Cooper’s uncle,” Holly said matter-of-factly, like she knew it to be the truth.

“She might. They are dating,” Kate said with a shrug. She didn’t know how much her daughter knew about dating and getting engaged, although thanks to Melody and Reid’s wedding, she knew Holly was aware of what a wedding was.

“It’s not fair. Cooper gets to have Ms. Swanner in his family. I wish she could be in our family.”

“Oh, honey. Ms. Swanner is sort of like our family already. Good friends can be like family.”

Before she even finished, Holly was shaking her head, her reddish curls dancing around her cherub cheeks. “Mommy, I wish we had a big, big family. Cooper and
